Choosing Between In-House IT and a Managed Service Provider
The right model depends on coverage needs, specialization, and who owns strategy β not on a default preference for either side.
In-house IT and managed service providers are not opposites. Many growing businesses use both: internal staff who know the company, and external coverage for after-hours support, specialized security, or surge capacity.
Ask what must be available nights and weekends, which skills you need occasionally versus daily, and who sets the technology roadmap. Pure in-house models struggle when a single hire is expected to be help desk, network engineer, and security lead. Pure outsourced models struggle when nobody inside the business can prioritize work or challenge a recommendation.
Write down the outcomes you need β response times, project capacity, security monitoring, vendor management β and score each model against them. The goal is a support design that matches how the business actually runs, with clear ownership either way.
