A business continuity plan (BCP) answers a simple question: if systems, premises, or people are unavailable tomorrow, how do you keep serving customers and paying staff?
For small and mid-sized businesses, continuity often gets deferred because it sounds like enterprise paperwork. In practice it is a short set of decisions: which processes must resume first, who is responsible, which systems and data they depend on, and how you will communicate during an incident.
Start with the scenarios you are most likely to face — ransomware, prolonged cloud outage, office access loss, or a key vendor going dark. Document recovery priorities, contact trees, and the last successful restore test. Review the plan when you change tools or hire into critical roles. A plan that has never been rehearsed is a hope, not a control.
